Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the ability to question particular rulings made by the official, following the practice currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a player can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further change at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
