Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and displaced over a million residents.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system caused widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of millions of people across the country.

Extensive Damage and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, disaster response teams documented rising waters climbing to the tops of houses and homes washed out by strong flows.

“Our personnel rescued fourteen people stranded on the roof engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident also called in panic, saying his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We rescued him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials confirmed two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and a second individual killed after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is projected to lose strength as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended recently over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones stronger and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers report that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms cause approximately US$3.5 million in losses for the Philippines annually.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration last week because of the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
